Enrichment Classes for homeschoolers
Sancta Familia Academy recognizes that parents have different needs. Depending on personal reasons for choosing home education and educational goals and philosophies, parents are looking for varying degrees of outside activities, assistance, and accountability. That is why SFA offers both Academic Classes, with a high level of accountability and coursework specifically designed to work with the Classical model of learning, and Enrichment Classes, which can be taken by all students regardless of the teaching style of the parents. Whether you are using a classical or traditional curriculum, you will need to supplement the core subjects with art, music, library, physical education, etc. Weekly classes offer parents the opportunity to give their child a classroom and group learning experience while also providing for these additional subjects.
Due to the preparation time, costs, and clean up involved in teaching arts & crafts or performing science experiments, many parents prefer these weekly classes for art and science. One microscope can be used by two or three students and then be re-used again and again for many more students over time. Each student at home needing to purchase a mircoscope for one year of high school biology might not find it cost effective when for the same price they can attend weekly classes all year, and not only use the mircroscope but benefit from a knowledgeable instructor and the experiences of classmates. Each student will bring a perspective to the class and they will learn from each other as well as from the instructor, textbook, and experiment or demonstration.
Finding materials for science experiments or arts and crafts may be fun for some parents, but most of us do not have the time or the desire to do this. Taking advantage of the benefits of a community, those who enjoy doing this get to do it for a number of students while the rest of us are given the opportunity to give our kids these necessary experiences without the hassle or the clutter.
In addition to science and art, students have the opportunity to take classes in subjects which their own parents may not be able to teach, such as music or drawing. Much of the subject matter covered in a course of physical education includes team sports. One needs other people in order to be a team. So, if you are loving teaching the core subjects at home and are looking for enrichment only classes, check out our list of Friday Electives. If you wish to offer an elective class, please fill out the request form below and let us know what your gift or talent is that you could share with other homeschoolers.
